Freshdesk vs Zoho Desk for SMB support teams of 5 to 50 agents
Short answer
For a support team of 5 to 50 agents, Zoho Desk usually wins on price per feature, and Freshdesk usually wins on speed to a polished, AI-assisted setup. On the official pricing pages as served in India on Nov 3, 2026, Zoho Desk listed Standard ₹800, Professional ₹1,400 and Enterprise ₹2,400 per user per month billed annually (plus a 5-user Express edition at ₹420 and a 3-user Free edition), while Freshdesk listed Growth ₹1,499, Pro ₹4,499 and Enterprise ₹7,099 per agent per month billed annually. Freshdesk's US-dollar page listed Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent per month billed annually; we could not retrieve Zoho's USD price list from Zoho's official page, and Zoho's prices differ by region. Choose Zoho Desk if you need multi-department support, enforced processes (Blueprint), telephony or a deep feature set on a tight budget, or you already use Zoho CRM. Choose Freshdesk if you want a fast, clean rollout with a strong AI agent and copilot roadmap, intelligent routing and multiple SLAs on its mid tier, and you are comfortable paying more per agent for it.

Who this comparison is for
This guide is for support leads, heads of customer experience and founders at small and mid-sized businesses running customer support teams of roughly 5 to 50 agents. You handle email, probably chat or WhatsApp, maybe phone, and you want SLAs, routing, a knowledge base and reporting that your team will actually use. You have narrowed the field to Freshdesk (from Freshworks) and Zoho Desk (from Zoho), two of the most common choices in this segment, and you want an honest view of which fits.
Prices come only from each vendor's official pages, checked on Nov 3, 2026: the Freshdesk pricing page, the Zoho Desk pricing page and the Zoho Desk plan comparison page. Both vendors localise prices. We captured Freshdesk in both US dollars and Indian rupees, and Zoho Desk in Indian rupees only, because Zoho served us INR and we could not retrieve its USD list from the official page. Feature statements come from the same pages. Opinions about fit are ours, from implementing and running help desks, and are labelled as such.
This is a customer support comparison. If you are choosing a tool for internal IT support, look at ITSM tools instead; our Zendesk vs Freshservice for internal IT guide explains why.

Pricing compared (checked on Nov 3, 2026)
Both vendors price per agent (Freshdesk) or per user (Zoho Desk) per month, with discounts for annual billing. Freshdesk's page advertises 20 percent savings for annual billing; Zoho's says up to 34 percent.
Indian rupee prices (both vendors, as served in India)

US dollar prices
| Freshdesk plan | Price (billed annually) |
|---|---|
| Growth | $19 per agent per month |
| Pro | $55 per agent per month |
| Enterprise | $89 per agent per month |
Zoho Desk's official pricing page served us INR only, so we do not quote Zoho USD prices. If you are outside India, open both pricing pages from your location and compare like for like.
Add-ons that change the bill
| Item | Freshdesk | Zoho Desk |
|---|---|---|
| AI copilot | Freddy AI Copilot $29 (₹2,399) per agent per month billed annually, on Pro and Enterprise | Generative AI via your own key (Express, Standard) or native plus BYOK (Professional, Enterprise); no separate copilot price on the pricing page |
| AI agent usage | First 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions included once per account; then $49 per 100 sessions | AI agents with Zoho's in-house models listed at up to 30 million tokens per month |
| Occasional users | Day passes: $2 Growth, $7 Pro, $12 Enterprise per pass (₹149, ₹499, ₹899) | Light agents: ₹345 per month add-on on Standard, Professional and Enterprise; 50 free on Enterprise |
| Integrations usage | Connector app tasks $80 per 5,000 tasks; MCP actions $15 per 1,000 | Zoho Flow and Zapier available from Standard (excluding features not in the plan) |
| Extra departments | Not applicable | Enterprise add-on ₹360 per department per month billed annually, up to 450 |
What the bill looks like at 10, 25 and 50 agents
These are simple multiplications of the INR annual list prices above, before taxes and add-ons. They are arithmetic on published prices, not quotes. We pair tiers by the capabilities a typical support team buys them for, which we explain in the next section.
| Team size | Zoho Desk Standard | Zoho Desk Professional | Freshdesk Growth | Freshdesk Pro | Zoho Desk Enterprise | Freshdesk Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 agents | ₹8,000 | ₹14,000 | ₹14,990 | ₹44,990 | ₹24,000 | ₹70,990 |
| 25 agents | ₹20,000 | ₹35,000 | ₹37,475 | ₹1,12,475 | ₹60,000 | ₹1,77,475 |
| 50 agents | ₹40,000 | ₹70,000 | ₹74,950 | ₹2,24,950 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹3,54,950 |
Figures are per month, billed annually. On the same INR basis, Zoho Desk Professional and Freshdesk Growth land close together, and Freshdesk Pro costs roughly three times Zoho Desk Professional per agent. Whether that gap is worth paying depends on the capabilities below, and on how much you value Freshdesk's AI and ease of setup.
Our view on cost
For most 5 to 50 agent teams, licence cost is meaningful but not the only cost. Admin time, migration effort and the AI usage you will actually buy can close or widen the gap. Price your real scope, including the add-ons you will use in year one.
How the tiers line up
The plan names do not line up neatly, so here is how we map them by what support teams usually need.
| Need | Freshdesk | Zoho Desk |
|---|---|---|
| Email ticketing, shared inbox, portal and knowledge base | Growth | Standard (public knowledge base starts here; Express has email, social and web forms) |
| Multiple SLA policies | Pro | Standard allows 4 SLAs; Professional 10 per department |
| Round-robin or load-balanced assignment | Pro | Professional |
| Skill-based routing | Enterprise | Enterprise |
| Custom dashboards and reports | Pro | Standard (10 custom dashboards, 50 custom reports); unlimited on Professional |
| Multilingual help desk or help centre | Pro | Professional (multilingual help centre) |
| Multiple departments with separate configuration | Not a plan feature on the pricing page | Professional (10), Enterprise (50) |
| Enforced process steps | Not listed as a named feature on the pricing page | Blueprint on Professional and Enterprise |
| Sandbox | Enterprise | Enterprise |
| Audit logs | Enterprise | Enterprise |
| IP restriction | Enterprise (allowed domains and IP whitelisting) | IP range restriction listed on all editions |
| Single sign-on | Listed on all three plans | Help centre SAML SSO from Standard |
Read this table as a guide to where capabilities start, not a statement that the implementations are identical. Test the specific behaviour you need in a trial.
Routing, SLAs and automation
This is where day-to-day experience differs most.
Freshdesk
Freshdesk's pricing page lists ticket dispatch and automations on all plans, multiple SLA policies and round-robin and load-balanced assignment from Pro, and skill-based ticket assignment on Enterprise. Business hours (global, multiple, group-specific) appear from Pro. In our experience, Freshdesk's automation is approachable: support leads can build and maintain dispatch rules and SLA reminders without a dedicated admin.
Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk's plan comparison page shows workflow rules, macros, time-based supervise rules and assignment rules with limits that step up by edition. For example, workflow rules are 5 per module on Standard, 15 per department per module on Professional and 30 on Enterprise; SLAs are 4 on Standard, 10 per department on Professional and 20 per department on Enterprise. Round-robin assignment starts on Professional and skill-based assignment is on Enterprise. Blueprints add enforced, step-by-step processes on Professional (1 active per department) and Enterprise (20 per department).
Our view
Zoho Desk gives you more process control per rupee, especially with Blueprint and departments, but its edition limits need watching as you grow. Freshdesk is simpler to run, but you pay more to unlock multiple SLAs and smart routing.
AI: Freddy vs Zia
Both vendors are investing heavily in AI. What matters for a 5 to 50 agent team is what you can use on your plan, and how it is charged.
Freshdesk Freddy AI
- Freddy AI Agent is listed on Growth, Pro and Enterprise. The pricing page says 500 free sessions are included once per account, after which you buy session packs ($49 per 100 sessions). An email AI agent session is defined as a 72-hour window from the customer's first email.
- Freddy AI Copilot (sentiment analysis, response assistant, live translation, summarisation, resolution assistant) is an add-on at $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise. You do not have to buy it for every agent.
- Freddy AI Insights (proactive insights with root cause analysis, conversational insights) is listed on Enterprise.
Zoho Desk Zia
- AI agents through Zia Agent Studio, listed with Zoho's in-house models at up to 30 million tokens per month.
- Generative AI (summaries, reply and writing assistance, article generation) with your own key on Express and Standard, and native plus BYOK on Professional and Enterprise.
- Zia field predictions on Professional and Enterprise; Zia Actions and the Zia dashboard on Enterprise.
Our view: Freshdesk's AI is more productised and easier to switch on, but it is metered and priced separately. Zoho's AI is broadly bundled, with BYOK options that suit teams who already have an AI provider agreement. If AI deflection is central to your business case, trial both with your own ticket data.
Channels and self-service
Zoho Desk's comparison page lists email channels (2 on Express, 5 on Standard, 10 on Professional, 100 on Enterprise), social channels from Express, instant messaging (WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat, LINE, Facebook Messenger, Instagram) from Standard, telephony from Professional, and live chat powered by SalesIQ on Enterprise. WhatsApp carries usage-based charges applied by WhatsApp.
Freshdesk's pricing page lists ticketing and a shared inbox, customer portal and knowledge base on all plans, with community forums, portal customisation, multilingual knowledge base and article versioning from Pro. The Freshdesk pricing page we checked focuses on the help desk itself; if chat, messaging and voice are central, confirm with Freshworks which product or bundle covers the channels you need.
Integrations, reporting and administration
Integrations
Zoho Desk's plan comparison page lists integrations by edition. From Standard it shows Zoho CRM, Bigin, Zoho Analytics, Zoho Projects, Zoho SalesIQ, Zoho Cliq, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, Salesforce, Atlassian Jira and Zapier and Zoho Flow (excluding flows or zaps that use features not in Standard), with private extensions and custom actions via extensions on Professional and above. If your sales team runs on Zoho CRM, this is a strong reason to pick Zoho Desk: agents see CRM context in the ticket and the two share contacts and accounts.
Freshdesk's pricing page lists connector apps (pre-built connectors for data sync and workflow automation) charged by task, at $80 per 5,000 tasks, and MCP actions at $15 per 1,000, with yearly MCP action allowances that rise by plan. Freshdesk is part of the Freshworks product family alongside Freshservice and Freshsales, which matters if you already use either.
Reporting
Both tools cover standard reports and dashboards. On Freshdesk, out-of-the-box analytics, standard reports and real-time dashboards are on all plans, custom real-time dashboards and an agent availability dashboard from Pro, and custom object analysis on Enterprise. On Zoho Desk, predefined reports start on Express, custom reports (50) and dashboards (10) on Standard, unlimited custom reports and dashboards plus SLA dashboards and global all-department reports on Professional, and scheduled reports on Enterprise.
Administration and security
Freshdesk lists role-based access control and single sign-on on all plans, and audit logs, sandbox, JWT authentication, agent shifts and allowed domains and IP whitelisting on Enterprise. Zoho Desk lists profiles and roles that become editable from Standard (5 each) and scale to 25 profiles and 25 roles on Professional and 50 profiles and 250 roles on Enterprise, field-level access control from Professional, and sandbox (3), audit log and field encryption on Enterprise.
Our view
For a team of 5 to 20 agents, administration differences rarely decide the choice. Above 20 agents, especially with several team leads making changes, a sandbox and audit log become valuable, and both vendors keep them on their top tier. Budget for Enterprise if change control matters to you.
Best for, and wrong choice when
Zoho Desk
Best for
Budget-conscious teams that want depth; organisations with several products, brands or functions; teams that need enforced processes; companies already in the Zoho ecosystem; teams in India and markets where Zoho's local pricing is strong.
Wrong choice when
You want the simplest possible setup with no edition-limit management; your integrations depend on apps that Zoho does not support well; your team will not invest time in configuration.
Freshdesk
Best for
Teams that want to go live fast with clean defaults; teams that value productised AI agents and copilot; companies already using Freshworks products; teams that need multiple SLAs and smart routing without heavy admin.
Wrong choice when
Cost per agent is the deciding factor; you need multiple departments with separate configuration or enforced step-by-step processes; you need a free tier for a very small team.
Switching and evaluation tips
Run a fair two-week trial
- Freshdesk offers a 14-day trial on its Enterprise plan; Zoho Desk offers a 15-day trial of any paid edition. Trial the tier you will actually buy, not just the top one.
- Connect a real support mailbox and run a sample of real tickets through both.
- Build your top three automations and your SLA policy in each.
- Test the AI features with your own content and measure what they deflect or draft well.
- Have two agents and one team lead use each tool for a full shift.
Before you migrate
- Count custom fields and check them against the target edition's limits.
- Decide your department or group structure first.
- Export knowledge articles and review them before import.
- Plan how much ticket history to move, and archive the rest.
